A2 highway (Lithuania)

The A2 motorway is a highway in Lithuania (Magistralinis kelias). It connects the capital city of Vilnius with the Panevėžys, via Ukmergė.

Its length is over 130 kilometres (81 mi). It is a motorway in almost a whole length. The Vilnius - Ukmergė highway was the first section opened. Later, the highway was extended to Panevėžys.

There are six junctions with U-turns in this motorway. Some of the U-turns have electronic detecting systems that lowers the speed limit on variable road signs if an U-turn is being used. If the U-turn lanes are clear, speed limit is default 130 km/h. Such sections with U-turns, but without this system have default lowered speed limit of 110 km/h. However, the U-turns should be replaced by grasses, because a road, or parts of this road with U-turns should not be declared as a Motorway.[1]

The A2 highway has 4 lanes (two lanes each way) separated by a wide grass line and safety rails. Its European route code is E272.

Most notable event in this road was peaceful political demonstration of the Baltic Way, during the Singing Revolution, in the late 1980s. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 675.5 kilometres (419.7 mi) across the three Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, considered at the time to be constituent republics of the Soviet Union.
