20 sen coin

The 20 sen coin (二十銭銀貨) was a Japanese coin worth one fifth of a Japanese yen, as 100 sen equalled 1 yen.[1] These coins were minted from 1870 to 1911 in 80% silver.[2][3]

Meiji

The following are circulation figures for the twenty sen coin, all of which were minted between the 3rd, and 44th year of Meiji's reign. The dates all begin with the Japanese symbol 明治 (Meiji), followed by the year of his reign the coin was minted. Each coin is read clockwise from right to left, so in the example used below "一十二" would read as "year 21" or 1888.

Notes
  1. Coins minted in 1871 have a scarce variety where the lower stroke in "Sen" is incomplete
  2. While pattern coins were made after 1911 into the early 1920s, no further coinage was adopted. These pattern coins are not included here and are rare today.[6]
