Shaun Murphy won his first ranking title by defeating Matthew Stevens 18–16 in the final. The tournament was sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Embassy.

Tournament summary

  • This was the last Embassy-sponsored World Championship due to new legislation preventing the advertising of tobacco products in the UK coming into force. 888.com took the sponsorship the next year and did so until 2008.[1]
  • Debutants at this year's World Championship were Michael Holt and future world champions Neil Robertson and Mark Selby. Holt reached the last 16 (see below); Robertson and Selby were defeated in round one by John Higgins and Stephen Hendry respectively.
  • 1991 champion John Parrott failed to qualify for the first time in his career,[2] losing to Fergal O'Brien 8–10 in the final qualifying round.[3]
  • Paul Hunter played his first match since being diagnosed with stomach cancer.[4] He lost 8–10 in round one to Michael Holt.[5]
  • Mark Williams made his first career maximum break in a ranking tournament (the sixth 147 in the World Championships at The Crucible) during his 10–1 first round win over Robert Milkins.[1]
  • Steve Davis made his first quarter-final since 1996. Davis beat Gerrard Greene 10–9 and Holt 13–10 before falling 4–13 to eventual champion Murphy[6]
  • Peter Ebdon's slow play caused Ronnie O'Sullivan to lose concentration, as Ebdon recovered from 2–8 down, to win their quarter final match 13–11.[7] At one point during the match, Ebdon took five and a half minutes to make a break of 12, nearly 10 seconds longer than O'Sullivan's maximum break in 1997.[8]
  • Eventual winner Shaun Murphy was 150–1 to win at the start of the tournament and became the first qualifier to win the tournament since Terry Griffiths in 1979.[9] He also became the second youngest world champion after Hendry in 1990.[10][11]
  • All Murphy's victories came against players ranked in the top 16; after defeating Chris Small (12) in the opening round he then beat former World Champions Higgins (5), Davis (13) and Ebdon (8) to reach the final against Stevens (6), who had finished runner-up in 2000.
  • Murphy defeated Stevens 18–16 in the final, despite Stevens having led 10–6 overnight and 12–11 by the end of the third session. This was the second time Stevens had relinquished a four frame overnight lead to lose in the final (after 2000, when he lost to Williams) and only the third time this had ever happened in world championship history.
