Track changes

Two chicanes were introduced along the Mulsanne Straight prior to the race. This was done to reduce the maximum speed of the cars after the Sauber C9 of Kenny Acheson reached 400 km/h (249 mph) the previous year.[2][3] FISA refused to renew the licence for the track unless the chicanes were installed to comply with a ruling passed by the World Motor Sport Council.[4] The ruling decreed no circuit licensed by FISA may have a straight longer than 2km.[4]

Race

The Sauber team did not compete after backers Mercedes pulled out of the race when it was declared a non-championship event.[5] This left Jaguar, Nissan and Porsche as the main contenders for the overall winner.[6] The #3 Jaguar (now running an XJR-12) walked away with the trophy, after the Nissans and the #1 Jaguar broke down.[6] After electrical problems with his own car, Martin Brundle replaced Eliseo Salazar in the Jaguar #3 car en route to victory.[6]

Official results
