  • 31 March - Nino de Angelo is selected to represent Germany at the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest with his song "Flieger". He is selected to be the thirty-fourth German Eurovision entry during Ein Lied für Lausanne held at the German Theatre in Munich.
  • 9 October - Premiere of Australian soap opera Neighbours on Sat. 1.
  • 22 November - British science fiction series Doctor Who begins premiering on television stations across Germany with the series going to air on RTL Television. The series will start with the very first serial of the 24th season Time and the Rani which was also the very serial to star Sylvester McCoy as the doctor.
