This year was celebrated as the centennial of college football, one hundred years since the 1869 game between Rutgers and Princeton.[4] In this centennial year of Rutgers football, Lehigh defeated them, in an upset, 17-7. Coach Dunlap said "We beat Columbia, Colgate and Harvard in 1961, our Lambert Cup year and this is the greatest football triumph for us since then."[5]
