Story

The story follows Ōtsuki, the foreman of Squad E in the underground forced labor camp for people in debt, as he uses one-day outside passes to leave the camp for a day. Usually, each trip involves food or drink in some way.

Characters

Main Characters

Tarō Ōtsuki (大槻 太郎, Ōtsuki Tarō)
Voiced by: Chō (Japanese); Greg Cote (English)
The protagonist of the story and main antagonist of the first half of the Bog of Desire arc in the original series. He is the foreman of Squad E in the underground facility. While his birthplace is unknown, he has been shown switching between Kansai, Chūgoku and Shikoku dialects when holding conversations. Utilizing his foreman privileges, he uses the perica (currency that is used in the underground facility) profits he makes from selling beer and snacks and cheating at the underground cee-lo games hosted by him to order one-day outside passes and thus get short-term parole. He himself does not show much desire to permanently get out of underground, however. While his age has not been specified, it is known that he was a university student 25 years prior to the events of the series and has worked as a company employee at some point afterwards.
Takuya Numakawa (沼川 拓也, Numakawa Takuya)
Voiced by: Takuya Satō (Japanese); Kregg Dailey (English)
Ōtsuki's close aide. He is 35 years old and from Miyazaki Prefecture. His role as the worldly-wise and straight man that gets caught up in his partners' mayhem is further emphasized in this series. At first he wasn't used to one-day excursions and was struggling to properly enjoy them. For this reason, he follows Ōtsuki as an example and deliberately schedules his paroles to fall on the same day as his.
Kaoru Isawa (石和 薫, Isawa Kaoru)
Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese); Kyle Colby Jones (English)
Ōtsuki's close aide. He is 34 years old and serves the role of a trickster and comic relief character to Ōtsuki and Numakawa. He is a fan of the Bakumatsu era and frequently and willingly participates in Ōtsuki's ideas and ventures.
Hajime Miyamoto (宮本 一, Miyamoto Hajime)
Voiced by: Toshiki Masuda
A young blacksuit who serves as the underground's overseer. He is 30 years old and from Hakodate, currently living alone in a mansion. He is a big fan of Western films.

Underground Labor Facility

Odagiri (小田切)
Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno
The foreman of Squad C in the underground facility. He uses his paroles to download movies for the prisoners to watch and isn't used to the outside world same way as Ōtsuki.
Itai (板井)
The foreman of Squad A in the underground facility. He is from Kumamoto Prefecture. A fan of comics like Ōtsuki, he was shocked to find out about the magazine Shōnen King's cancellation. It is later found out that he had a wife and kids and is also a two-time divorcee.
Iwata (岩田)
The foreman of Squad B in the underground facility. He is from Ōita Prefecture. Just like Ōtsuki, he is a fan of comics and was shocked to find out about the magazine Shōnen King's cancellation just like Itai.
Yamaki (山木)
Odagiri's close aide.
Akira Kuroki (黒木 明, Kuroki Akira)
Numakawa's friend from high school who was sent to Squad E in the underground. He is from Miyazaki Prefecture, just like Numakawa. His hobby is gambling and he is especially a fan of horse racing.
Masashi Yamamoto (山本 まさし, Yamamoto Masashi)
Numakawa and Kuroki's friend from high school. He has a relatively wide range of interests and his personality allows him to make friends with just about anyone.
Mizukami (水上)
A middle-aged laborer who appears in chapter 49. He tells his fellow prisoners how he achieved an out-of-body experience and has been using it to go to the outside world without needing an outside pass for more than half a year. Not believing him at first, when Ōtsuki's group attempt his method, it actually ends up working for them.
Satoshi Aida (相田 さとし, Aida Satoshi)
An aspiring comedian turned laborer who appears in chapter 50 of Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues and reappears in chapter 61 of this series. He happened to join in Ōtsuki's group's chat about candy and has a keen interest in sweets in general.
Kazutaka Hyoudou (兵藤 和尊, Hyōdō Kazutaka)
An old man who is president of the Teiai group. When it is his or his henchmen's birthday, the prisoners of the underground labor facility are treated to a special menu, and if he is in a good mood he may also present them new equipment, only to immediately confiscate it when his mood is spoiled.
Yukio Tonegawa (利根川 幸雄, Tonegawa Yukio)
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese); David Harbold (English)
One of the top executives of the Teiai group and protagonist of his own spin-off series Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues. He makes an appearance in the crossover oneshot of volume 5 in Tonegawa where he is pitted against Ōtsuki in the katsudon-eating competition.
Yoshihiro Kurosaki (黒崎 義裕, Kurosaki Yoshihiro)
One of the top executives of the Teiai group and potential candidate for the No.2 spot within the company. He visited the underground labor facility and guided Miyamoto to the area of Squad E, but he then noticed the fermented food prepared by Numakawa and enjoyed it, thus ending up carrying all of it away.
Yanauchi (柳内)
One of the blacksuits. His hobby is cooking, and he is especially proficient at preparing soba, having done it for more than 30 years.
Makita (牧田)
One of the blacksuits. He is a two-child single father living in Sendagi. He regularly frequents the National Museum of Nature and Science, to the point that he owns a years-lasting exclusive free pass that he uses to take his two sons to it numerous times.

Bacchus (バッカス, Bakkasu)
A young female pet dog who appears in chapter 60. Having separated from her owners for unknown reasons, she is found and tamed by Ōtsuki, who got out on parole in the Tokyo Park.
