Zinnia Kumar, also known as Zinnia, is an Australian fashion model[2] and published scientist in human evolutionary biology and ecology.[3][4]

As a fashion model Zinnia has appeared in magazines Harpers Bazaar (Fashion Cover)[5], Wonderland Magazine[6], Tank Magazine[7], Notion Magazine[8] & Verve India X Chanel (Cover)[9].

Early life and education

Zinnia Kumar was born in Sydney, Australia to Indian parents and grew up in Sydney's south-western suburbs.[10] She attended Miller Technology High School where she graduated the top of her class and was awarded DUX. Kumar graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Advanced Science, with First Class honours.[11]

Career

Zinnia Kumar has published two original scientific research papers on negative frequency-dependant selection on human traits: the first about men's facial hair, entitled Peak beard[3] and the second on women's hair colour.[4]

Kumar is also a field conservation ecologist having worked in the Australian outback working with Little Blue Penguins, invertebrates and wetland birds.[12] Kumar is also a motivational speaker.[10][13]

Zinnia's study of attractiveness of facial hair in men was the first time negative frequency dependant selection had been applied to a human trait, since Charles Darwin coined the term.[14] The published paper found that attractiveness varies with novelty, less common facial hair types were considered most attractive by men and women.[15] This research went viral on the internet and was covered by many news outlets BBC,[16] The Washington Post,[17] Time,[18] The Guardian,[19] Science Magazine[20] and Forbes,[21] coining a new social term 'Peak Beard'.

Zinnia Kumar is currently undertaking a research degree at Brasenose College, Oxford University.[10][11]
