Zaryadye Park (Russian: Парк «Зарядье») is a landscape urban park located adjacent to Red Square in Moscow, Russia on the site of the former Rossiya Hotel. Zaryadye Park is the first public park built in Moscow for over 50 years, the last being the Soviet Friendship Park built for the 1957 Festival of Youth and Students.[2] The park was inaugurated on 9 September 2017 by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Time magazine puts Zaryadye Park on 2018 list of World's Greatest Places[3].

Description

The area of the park's facilities is almost 78,000 square meters, of which 25,200 square meters will be occupied by a multipurpose concert hall. The park also has underground parking for 430 cars. The first new park in Moscow for over 50 years, it cost more than $480 million.[4]

Plans for a new park were first raised in 2012 when the city of Moscow and its chief architect Sergey Kuznetsov organized a design competition to transform the historically privatized, commercial Zaryadye area into a public park. An international design consortium led by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) with Hargreaves Associates, Citymakers and BuroHappold Engineering was selected out of 90 submissions from 27 different countries. The selected competition design sought to create a park borne of Russian and Muscovite heritage.

The main feature of the park is its facilities hidden under the landscape while the park itself is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and the floodplains.

Another advantage of the new park is a picturesque view of the Kremlin, which visitors can enjoy from a floating bridge over the Moskva River.

Floating bridge

The floating bridge is a thin air structure in the form of the letter "V" with a large outward extension above the water. It towers over the embankment and seems to hover over the Moscow River.

The bridge is unique in Russia: it is a 70 meter structure without a single support. The bearing structure of the bridge is made of concrete, and the decorative elements are made of metal. The deck is wooden; the construction withstands a load of 240 tons corresponding to 3–4 thousand people.

For the security of visitors and residents, high fences are installed so that no one can climb or jump over the sides of the bridge.

Media center

Media center

The media center covers an area of 8500 square meters. It exhibits Russian natural and architectural sights and covers various topics of the Russian History, such as the Battle of Borodino, the fire of Moscow or Council in Fili.

In one of the pavilions of the media center, viewers are shown films about cultural monuments, protected areas and historical places of Russia. In the cinema, three rows of chairs will be located on a movable platform in front of a concave screen, its shape creating a panoramic image.

The only digital media hall in Russia with a cylindrical screen and an interactive image will virtually transport viewers to the times during the formation of Moscow.

Ice cave

Ice cave

Stylized pavilion with an interactive exhibition will tell visitors about the history of development of the Far North.

For reliability in one part of the pavilion year-round will be maintained a negative temperature. For the thickness of the ice, freezing of about 70 tons of water is required.

During the day, the temperature in the ice cave will not fall below minus two degrees, and in the evening – below minus five. Such a temperature regime was recognized by experts as optimal for an ice-free construction. The cover of the cave itself is a natural white color.

In the ice cave, an educational site, the "Conservation Embassy", was also started. Employees of national reserves and other environmental institutions will be able to conduct educational programs here, as well as exchange experiences in the field of biology and ecology.

Concert hall

Zaryadye Concert Hall

In the park there will be a Concert Hall with an amphitheater. The building under a glass dome with an organ and a stage-transformer will become a multifunctional concert venue of the capital. This is a separate object that does not belong directly to the park. It will be introduced already after the opening of the park – in the spring of 2018.

The Philharmonic project is one of the most difficult in the park. On the one hand, the building will be "dug up" into the hill and it will be possible to walk along the roof. Only the glass facade will remain open.

The new Philharmonic will replace the concert site of the demolished Rossiya Hotel, on the site of which the park has been built. The area of the new cultural object will be 25,200 square meters. For visitors to the Philharmonic there will be a large hall for 1560 seats and a small hall for 400 people.

The hall will be multifunctional. As the hall is mechanized, it may host not only symphonic music, but also pop and jazz concerts.

Amphitheater

Amphitheater

The amphitheater adjoins to the philharmonic society. It will be covered with a dome, the so-called glass bark, to protect park visitors from the rain. This is the world's largest translucent structure that will keep the warm climate under it even in winter. The only wall of this unusual structure will remain on the east side, where the "glass cortex" adjoins the Philharmonic.

The amphitheater will be a stepped landscape design descending from the hill to the stage. The spots will be made of wood. The paths between the rows are planned to be filled with small pebbles, it will become part of the drainage system. Amphitheater organically fit into the natural landscape of the park.

A large open amphitheater in Zaryadye can accommodate 2500 people. The small amphitheater, in which the media screen will be installed, is designed for 400 visitors.

Next to the stage will install a media screen. There will be film screenings, concerts, lectures and other events. The design of the summer amphitheater was developed by the winner of the 2012 competition for the project of the Zaryadie Park.

Attraction "Flight over Russia"

Concept of Park Zaryadye

To see all the beauty and breadth of Russia, to visit the Far North, to admire the Ural mountains and the Caucasus ridges, visitors to the 4D-attraction "Flight over Russia" will be able to find themselves in the Far East and the Baltic Sea.

On a 12-meter parabolic screen, viewers sitting on special dynamic platforms will be shown about 30 unique natural locations in Russia, taken from a height. Thanks to the "effect of presence" Muscovites will feel the water splashes and the wind alive, feel the sounds and smells of nature. In one session the attraction will be able to accommodate 40 people, and its capacity will be 400 spectators per hour.
