Zac Tubbs (born May 14, 1984) is a former Division I athlete who earned athletic honors on the high school, collegiate, and professional level. Tubbs was named to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas SEC Team on August 6, 2017. [1]
High school career
Tubbs attended Cullman High School in his hometown of Cullman, Alabama. Known for being tremendously strong in the weight room,[2] he garnered nearly every recognition available in his high school career, including All-America honors. Named a Max Emfinger four-star recruit,[3] Tubbs was selected to The Birmingham News Super All-State Team,[4] the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super 12 Team,[5][6] and the Mobile Press-Register Elite 18 Team.[7] The Birmingham News and Alabama Sports Writers Association both tabbed him a first-team All-State selection.[8] Tubbs started at left tackle in the Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Game Classic.[9] Scout.com listed Tubbs as the No.1 offensive lineman[10]/ No.18 overall player in Alabama[11] while 247 Sports composite rankings listed him as the No.1 OT/ No.15 overall player. [12]
Tubbs signed a full scholarship [13] to the University of Arkansas after being recruited by Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Ole Miss.[14] PrepStar on Tubbs: “A mountainous OL who is working on improving his foot speed. Tubbs is a gamer. He is very coachable and he learns quick. Zac had 107 pancake blocks and graded out at 93% his senior year. A tremendous pass blocker, Tubbs hasn’t allowed a sack his entire high school career. [15]
College career
Tubbs was a four-year letterman and team captain for the University of Arkansas football team. He earned his first career start as a true freshman against Louisiana Lafayette[16] and was only one of two true freshmen to see playing time in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.[17] As a sophomore, Tubbs was named to the College Football News first-team All-Bowl Team[18] after the Hogs beat Missouri in the 2003 Independence Bowl. Tubbs started the first five games of his junior season at right tackle and was playing at an All-SEC pace before suffering a severe, season-ending injury.[19] Tubbs was tabbed a preseason second-team All-SEC selection in 2005[20] and 2006, [21] and was named to the 2005-2006 Lon Farrell Academic Honor Roll.[22]
Following his senior season, Tubbs earned several first-team All-SEC honors[23][24] and was presented with the Nelson Rainey Award. Arkansas Offensive Line Coach Mike Markuson on Tubbs: “He gives the team extra confidence and toughness when he’s on the field. He’s got a nasty side to him when it comes down to game day, and he can be a vocal guy. There’s an air about him that says, ‘Hey, we’re going to get it done today’. That’s why we love having him out there.”[25]
Tubbs was named to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas SEC Team (Third Team) on August 6, 2017. [26]
Professional career
Described as a strong run-blocking lineman who plays with a nasty attitude,[27] Tubbs signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills following the 2007 NFL Draft. [28] Following his release from Buffalo, he signed with Team Arkansas in the newly formed All-American Football League.[29] Tubbs spent 2009[30] and 2010[31] with the Sioux Falls Storm of the Indoor Football League, earning second-team All-IFL honors in 2010.[32] He signed with the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League for the 2012 season.[33]
Athletic Pedigree
Tubbs was inducted into the AAA Minor League Hall of Fame in 2013.[34] His father,[35] grandfather [36] and great uncle[37] are all members of the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame. His cousin, Beau Kitson, was a two-time All-SCIAC selection as an offensive lineman at the University of La Verne. [38]
