Yul Moldauer (born August 26, 1996) is an American artistic gymnast. He is the 2017 U.S. National all-around champion, and has won a bronze in the floor exercise in the 2017 World Championships.[1]

Early life

Moldauer was born in Seoul, South Korea and was adopted by Peter and Orsa Moldauer before he was one year old.[2][3] He has three siblings, Leah, Sorcha and Sundo. He grew up on a farm in Colorado, and attended Golden High School. He is currently a student at the University of Oklahoma where he majors in finance.[4]

He joined a local gym in free tryout when he was seven, and when he was ten he joined 5280 Gymnastics, where he was coached by the Artemev family (Vladimir, Irina, and Alexander Artemev). In the next few years, he started winning at State meets, the Regionals, eventually winning a place on the Junior National Team.[5][6]

Career

In 2014, Moldauer won the junior title on the pommel horse at the P&G Championships.[7]

In 2015, he became the all-around winner in the 18-year-olds division in the Junior Olympic National Championships[8]

In 2016, Moldauer won his first NCAA all-around title.[9][10]

In his first top level international competition at the American Cup in Newark, New Jersey, in March 2017, he finished first over Olympic gold and silver medalist Oleg Vernyayev.[11] Moldauer was the NCAA champion in the floor exercise and rings, and the silver-medalist in all-around and parallel bars in 2017. In August 2017, he competed in the USA Gymnastics National Championships in Anaheim, California and won gold in the all-around competition and tied for first place with Eddie Penev in the floor exercise.[12]

Moldauer made his first appearance in a World Championships in the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Montreal, Canada. He won bronze in the floor exercise,[13] and finished 7th in the all-around competition.[14]

In March 2018, Moldauer competed in the 2018 American Cup and won gold in the individual all-around event over more successful gymnasts such as Kenzō Shirai of Japan, the 2017 world individual all-around bronze medalist, thanks to Moldauer's strength on all apparatuses in achieving one of the top three scores on each.
