Ye Zhengda (simplified Chinese: 叶正大; traditional Chinese: 葉正大; pinyin: Yè Zhèngdà; 17 August 1927 – 14 December 2017) was a Chinese politician and engineer. He was an adjunct professor and senior engineer at Northwestern Polytechnical University. In 1988, he was awarded the military rank of lieutenant general (Zhongjiang) by the Chinese government.

He was a member of the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and a delegate to the 5th National People's Congress.

Ye was born Ye Funong (叶福农) in Huiyang District, Huizhou, Guangdong, in 1927, to Ye Ting (1896-1946) and Li Xiuwen (1907-1946), the first of nine children, the others being: Ye Zhengming (叶正明, 1931-2003), Ye Huaming (叶华明, born 1935), Ye Jianmei (叶剑梅, 1937-1993), Ye Yangmei (叶扬眉, 1936-1946), Ye Zhengguang (叶正光, born 1939), and Ye Qiguang (born 1942).[1]

In 1947, Ye attended a Russian school in northeastern China founded by the Northeast Democratic United Army. He joined the Communist Party of China in the following year and graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute in 1955, where he majored in the Department of Aircraft Production, studying alongside Li Peng and Zou Jiahua. That same year, he returned to China. In August 1956, he established China's first Aircraft Design Office; one year and nine months later, Shenyang JJ-1 was developed.[2] Beginning in 1956, he served in several posts in the Chinese government, including engineer of Songling Machinery Factory, deputy dean of the Six Research Institute of the PRC Ministry of National Defense, deputy director of Defense Industry of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, deputy director of the Science and Technology Committee of the Commission for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and director of the 2nd and 3rd Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics. During the Cultural Revolution, he was divided into "capitalist roader", he was mistreated and tortured. The Red Guards paraded him through the streets and beat him in public.[3] The Chinese government bestowed upon him the military rank of lieutenant general (Zhongjiang) in 1988. Ye retired in 1998.[4]

On December 14, 2017, he died in Beijing.

Personal Life

Ye Zhengda married Ren Yue (Chinese: 任岳) in Moscow, the Soviet Union, an actress in the August First Film Studio.[3][4]
