Yandex Map Editor is map editing service launched by Yandex in April 2010.[1] In geographies where it is hard to find providers of good map data, user contributions could be used to increase map quality. Changes to Yandex.Map editor were intended to appear on Yandex Maps only after sufficient review by moderators.

Site "Yandex Map Editor" is based on the work of many volunteers from all over the world.[2] Similar websites are also exploited, such as OpenStreetMap and Wikimapia.

Editor

Any registered Yandex user can edit the map through a simple web editor pending edit moderation.[3]

The editor itself makes it possible to create three classical types of vector data objects - a point, a line, a contour. The list of categories (more than 150) includes the most popular types of objects, many of which have their own icons, such as roads, parks, houses with entries, shops, traffic lights and speed cameras atc.[3]

In the editor there are five special modes for drawing objects:

  • Scaling and rotation - to rotate objects around their axis and reduce / increase the size.
  • Angle alignment - makes it easy to draw objects with most corners straight.
  • Rounding corners - simplifies the drawing of roads and rivers, rounding their corners.
  • Adhesion - the boundaries of the contours of objects of the same category are joined in one line.
  • Cutting - helps draw buildings with adjacent borders, as well as high-rise buildings

The editing interface also allows for additional data to be added to certain categories of objects, such as the height of buildings, the direction of traffic at the roads, hours of operation, phone numbers, the site from the organizations, and much more.

There are elements forbidden for cartography on the service, for example, military objects, landfills, beacons, runways and other.[4]

From February 2017, anyone can get right to create a line of transport routes in his city.[5]

Moderation

On the service there is a premoderation of all objects. Edits that are moderated go to Yandex Maps and other geoinformation services of the company.[6]
