William Villalongo (born December 14, 1975 in Hollywood, Florida) is an American artist working in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Villalongo is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.

Early life and education

William Villalongo received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union School of Art and Science in 1999. He furthered his education by receiving his Masters in Fine Art from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University.[1]

Career and influences

William Villalongo's work has exhibited nationally in solo exhibitions at University of Connecticut Contemporary Art Galleries, Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at University of the Arts Philadelphia, Scarfone-Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa, FL, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture in Charlotte, North Carolina. Villalongo has also completed residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in ME, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Studio-f at the University of Tampa, Florida; the Hermitage Artist Retreat, and the Fountainhead, Miami, FL.[2]

Villalongo has also participated in group shows at institutions nationally, including the Studio Museum in Harlem and El Museo de Barrio in New York City; Weatherspoon Museum of Art in Greensboro, North Carolina; and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, NYC. Reviews of his work have appeared in Artforum, The New York Times and Huffington Post among others. Villalongo is represented by Susan Inglett Gallery in New York City.[3]

William Villalongo navigates the politics of historical erasure directing his work towards a reassessment of Western, American and African Art histories. Working out of the notion of Blackness as a verb he reframes familiar images, events, and themes in our cultural landscape. He explores dualities such as male-female, visibility/invisibility, humanity/nature incorporating appropriations from ancient myth to contemporary politics. This vast time frame narrates a conversation between images by which current existential concerns of representation are made more visible.[4]
