Lars William "Wild Bill"[1] Karlsson (born 8 January 1993) is a Swedish professional ice hockey forward, currently playing for the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted in the second round, 53rd overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and has also previously played for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Playing career
In 2011–12 Karlsson finished 12th in Allsvenskan in points with 45 points in 46 games, and was second on his team (Broc Little led the league in points).[2] He made his senior Swedish Hockey League debut with HV71.
On 20 May 2013, Karlsson was signed by the Ducks to a three-year entry level contract. He was returned on loan to HV71 for the 2013–14 season.[3]
Karlsson made his NHL debut on 11 October and scored his first and second NHL goals on 13 October 2014, against Michal Neuvirth of the Buffalo Sabres.[4] Karlsson was reassigned to the Norfolk Admirals on 24 November 2014.[5] Despite being continually recalled during the season, Karlsson ended the 2014–15 season in the American Hockey League.
On 2 March 2015, Karlsson was traded by the Ducks to the Columbus Blue Jackets along with Rene Bourque, and a 2015 second round pick for James Wisniewski and a 2015 third round pick.[6]
On 21 June 2017, Karlsson was exposed by the Blue Jackets and selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. The Blue Jackets traded a first-round pick, a second-round pick in 2019, and the contract of injured forward David Clarkson to Vegas with the agreement that the Golden Knights would select Karlsson.[7]
Karlsson spent the 2017–18 season centering a line with Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault.[8] This proved to be a productive line with all three putting up career numbers.[9] On 31 December 2017, Karlsson scored his first career hat-trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was also the first hat-trick in Vegas Golden Knights history.[10] He recorded his second career hat trick against the Calgary Flames on 18 March 2018.[11] Karlsson ended the regular season with 43 goals, setting a new NHL record for goals scored by a player in an expansion team's inaugural season.[12] For the first time in his career, Karlsson was a runner up for the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's top goal scorer. His 43 goals placed third behind Patrik Laine (44) and Alexander Ovechkin (49).[13] After his career season, Karlsson was named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for his high standard of play and sportsmanship.[14] On 20 June, Karlsson was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy and also became the first player since Wayne Gretzky to win an end of the season award in their team's inaugural season.[15]
He was also awarded Guldpucken as the top Swedish ice hockey player in the 2017-2018 season.[16]
