The Wichita Fire Department (WFD) is the local government agency responsible for protecting the citizens and property of Wichita, Kansas from fires and fire hazards. In addition to this the organization provides basic life support coverage along with Sedgwick County EMS. Organized in 1886, the Wichita Fire Department currently operates out of 22 Fire Stations, located throughout the city, organized into 4 Battalions employing 412 paid, full-time firefighters. The WFD currently operates a fire apparatus fleet of 16 Engines, 4 Trucks, 4 Quints, 2 Ladders, 14 Squads, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Mobile Air Unit, 1 Command Van, 1 Utility Truck, 1 USAR Trailer, 1 Fireground Rehabilitation(Rehab.) Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials(Haz-Mat.) Unit, 1 Water Tender, and numerous other special, support, and reserve units.

In 2010, the Wichita Fire Department responded to over 44,000 emergency calls. In August 2016, the Wichita Fire Department commemorated their 130th anniversary with recognition of firefighter of the year and reported that they receive 60,000 to 70,000 phone calls a year.[1] In 2010, the Department responded to over 44,000 emergency calls.
