Westhorpe is a linear village and civil parish in the Suffolk countryside, thirteen miles (21 km) from Bury St. Edmunds, eight miles from Stowmarket and a mile (3 km) from the villages of Wyverstone and Finningham.

Administratively Westhorpe forms part of the non-metropolitan district of Mid Suffolk.

Westhorpe Hall was a former seat of the Dukes of Suffolk and the place of death of Mary Tudor, Queen of France, with its close neighbour East Thorpe manor, being the seat of a previous duke, William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk.[2]

Notable people

  • Jean Kent (1921−2013), film and television actress, lived there until her death[3]
  • John Clarke (3 October 1609 – 20 April 1676), medical doctor, Baptist minister, co-founder of the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, author of its influential charter, and a leading advocate of religious freedom in the Americas.
