The western bearded greenbul (Criniger barbatus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found in West Africa. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

Formerly, some authorities considered the eastern bearded greenbul as conspecific with the western bearded greenbul.[2] Alternate names for the western bearded greenbul include the bearded bulbul, western bearded bulbul and bearded greenbul.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized:[3]

  • Togo bearded bulbul (C. b. barbatus) - (Temminck, 1821): Found from Sierra Leone to Benin
  • Niger bearded bulbul (C. b. ansorgeanus) - Hartert, 1907: Alternately named the Gabon green-tailed bristlebill. Found in southern Nigeria
