Wes Goosen (born 20 October 1995) is a South African-born, New Zealand rugby union player who currently plays as a midfielder or outside back for Wellington in New Zealand's domestic Mitre 10 Cup and the Hurricanes in the international Super Rugby competition.[1][2][3][4]
Early career
Born in the South African city of East London, Goosen moved to New Zealand along with his family at the age of 4, initially settling in Auckland, where he attended primary school, before moving south to the nation's capital, Wellington where he attended high school at Wellington College. After graduating from high school, he went on to play club rugby for Old Boys University while also being a member of Wellington's Under-19 side which won the national title in 2014.[2][5]
Senior career
Goosen first played provincial rugby for Wellington in 2014, making a solitary appearance in a 25-37 loss at home to Waikato in round 1, a defeat which was a sign of things to come for the Lions, traditionally one of New Zealand's rugby powerhouses, who would go on to be relegated down to the Championship for 2015 after recording just 1 win in 10 games.
Wellington were unable to gain promotion at the first time of asking, finishing 2nd to Hawke's Bay in the regular season standings before narrowly being defeated by the Magpies, 26-25 in the final. Goosen was much more of a regular during 2015, scoring 2 tries in 9 matches.
He was an ever present in 2016, helping himself to 4 tries in 11 games, however it was not enough to see Wellington return to the Premiership as they were surprisingly defeated 40-37 at home by North Harbour at the playoff semi-final stage, with Goosen's 25th minute try scored in vain.[4]
Super Rugby
Goosen was not named in the Hurricanes squad for the 2016 Super Rugby season, however following an incident in which 5 players breached the franchise's protocols and were subsequently stood down, he made his Super Rugby debut in the number 11 jersey against the Reds. It was to prove to be a memorable first match for the 20-year old, scoring with his first touch of the ball in the 14th minute to help his side record a comfortable 29-14 win. He made one further substitute appearance in a year which ended with the 'Canes being crowned Super Rugby champions after defeating South African side, the Lions, 20-3 in the final.[1][4][6]
Impressed by his appearances for both Wellington and the Hurricanes, head coach Chris Boyd promoted Goosen to the senior squad for the franchise's title defense in 2017.[3]
International
Goosen was a New Zealand Schools representative in 2013 and scored a try in their 17-16 victory over Australia.[7] He was also a member of the New Zealand Under-20 side which competed in the Oceania Championship in Australia in May 2015, however he didn't make the final squad for the 2015 World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Italy.[5][8][9]
