The Wembley Cup is an invitational football tournament. The first edition of the tournament took place between 24 and 26 July 2009 at Wembley Stadium, Wembley Park, London, United Kingdom.[1] The winning team was Celtic, ahead of Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Al-Ahly.[2][3] Each team played two matches, with three points awarded for a win and one point for a draw. Each goal was rewarded with a point and each one conceded saw a point deducted.[1][4]

Subsequent tournaments

In the last match of the inaugural Wembley Cup (2009, Non-Youtubers) it was announced that the success of the tournament had encouraged organisers to confirm a second edition of the competition in the summer of 2010.[5] However the 2010 tournament did not take place and the Wembley Cup has not been staged again for proper teams.

The Wembley Cup, also known as The Wembley Cup with EE, is an annual football match played by male YouTube football stars. After first being played in summer of 2015, it has soared in popularity globally and has spearheaded the YouTube football match scene. It is named after the stadium it is played at and its main sponser is EE.[7]

The match is between 2 teams of YouTube stars who are picked by the captain of both teams. From the 2016 Wembley Cup onwards, 3 ex-professional "legends"[8] [9]are also assigned to each team. As part of the build up and to build hype, players from each team must compete in challenges to "win" the legend who is up for grabs for that challenge. The likes of Steven Gerrard[10], William Gallas and Robbie Fowler are some of the legends to have made appearances. In the 2017 Wembley Cup, the record attendance in YouTube football history was set at 34,172 attendees.

Hashtag United are currently the cup holders, who won their 1st Wembley Cup against Tekkers Town at the 2017 Wembley Cup Final held at Wembley Stadium.

History

[11] In August of 2015[12], the Wembley Cup kicked off for the first time. This Wembley Cup was played behind closed doors and had 0 attendees. The 2 captains were Spencer Owen and Miniminter. This was also the only Wembley Cup not to include "legend" players in the teams and not to be live streamed on YouTube. The first Wembley Cup received great feedback from users and on the 14th July 2016, Spencer Owen confirmed on his YouTube channel that it was returning for a second season.

With the 2015 Wembley Cup being a hit with fans, a second season was confirmed. The whole match was completely revamped with the introduction of the match being live streamed on YouTube, the sale of live tickets to the game, the inclusion of ex professional "legends" and many more small features which had differed from the first season. It was a hit, reaching near sell out numbers over 18,000 people attended live and hundreds of thousands watched the livestream on YouTube. This bought the Wembley Cup to the attention of the media and other news outlets.

[13]With the 2016 Wembley Cup being a hit for the second successive season, it only made sense for it to return for a third. Much like the second Wembley Cup, it was live streamed on YouTube, tickets available for purchase and "legends" making an appearance. The third season of the Wembley Cup was a landmark for YouTube football as it doubled the YouTube football attendance record set by the previous Wembley Cup from 18,00 to 34,172.[14] It was also the first time the FA trialled VAR at Wembley, although it was not called upon within the game.[15] [16]
