Welfare Party Kerala

The Welfare Party of Kerala is the Kerala unit of the Welfare Party of India. It was launched on October 19, 2011 at Tagore Hall, Kozhikode.[1]

Ideology

The Welfare Party of Kerala espouses the basic ideals of inclusive communism, social justice for Dalit-Adivasis and backward classes. It advocates for cultural diversity, religious pluralism, social conservatism and basic lifestyle development.

Leadership

From October 19, 2011 to November 10, 2013, Koottil Mohammad Ali was the state President. He was succeeded by Hameed Vaniyambalam, who was elected due to popular demand in 2013.

Current office bearers are:

  • State President - Hameed Vaniyambalam
  • General Secretaries - Thennilapuram Radhakrishnan and P. A. Abdul Hakeem
  • Treasurer - P. Ismail
  • Vice Presidents - Surendran Karippuzha and E.C. Ayisha.
  • Secretaries - K.A. Shafeeq, Sreeja Neyyattinkara, Razak Paleri and Sasi Pandalam.[2]

The organization has a 16-member state executive, a 33-member state working committee and a 120-member State General Council. The Welfare Party of Kerala has district committees in all 14 districts and committees in 120 assembly constituencies out of the 140 constituencies in Kerala.

Events

In addition to participating in daily political and social questions in Kerala, the party has implemented and advocated various programs.

Land struggle

The organization argues for comprehensive land reform. Several struggles were organized by the landless people of Kerala.[3][4]

Land summit

The party organized the Kerala Land Summit, an academic conference, held 10-11 May 2017, to prepare a Comprehensive Land Reform Act.[5][6]

Janhita Rashtreeya Munnetta Yatra

The party organized a political caravan led by Vaniyambalam. The caravan was named Juanita Rashtreeya Magneto Yatra and held in 2015, from April 10- May 5. The Caravan was conducted ahead of local self-government elections. It went through 140 Kerala Legislative Assembly constituencies and demonstrated the growth of the party.[7]

Opposition to demonetization

The Welfare Party is one of the few organizations to oppose demonetization by the Government of India on the day it was announced. The Welfare Party protested the program.[8][9]

Electoral politics

2014 Parliamentary election

The 2014 general election was the first Parliamentary Election since the formation of the Welfare Party of Kerala. In this election, the Welfare Party of Kerala contested five constituencies. The Election Commission of India allotted a gas cylinder as the Party's temporary election symbol because the Party had not yet chosen a permanent symbol.

2015 local government elections

The Party won 42 seats in Kerala.

2016 Assembly elections

The Party contested in 41 constituencies for the assembly election, but was unable to obtain a significant presence.

Units

FITU

Federation of Indian Trade Unions (FITU) is an umbrella of trade unions under Welfare Party. There are seven sub-unions in Kerala under the FITU.

Fraternity Movement

The Fraternity Movement is a student and youth movement working for a justice-based India under the idea of Fraternity.
