Athletics

Watertown is a member of the Naugatuck Valley League. It supports a wide array of sports for its students, including soccer, cross country, field hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, indoor track, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance team, wrestling, swimming and diving, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, outdoor track, and lacrosse. Facilities for the sports are scattered all across Watertown, including its new turf field (2009) and pool located on campus, Deland Field, Veterans Memorial Park[1] and Crestbrook Park Golf Course. Watertown is a member of CAS and CIAC. The boys' ice hockey team is a co-op between both Watertown High School and Pomperaug High School of Southbury, Connecticut. This team, unlike other sports the school offers, is a member of the South West Conference. All home games are played on the campus of the Taft School, also located in Watertown. Also co-op with Pomperaug is the boy's wrestling team.

Theater

The recent musicals have all been directed and produced by Foster Reese. The plays are all directed by seniors who volunteer.

Music

The music department is led by: Joseph Hahn and Donna Poliquin

  • Music Under the Stars: Outdoor concert where students and teachers perform.
  • Talent Show: Competition where students perform and are judged by a panel of students and teachers.
  • Winter Concert: Performance for Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Choir, Chamber Choir, and String Ensemble. (Usually classical and winter themed music)
  • Pop Concert: Performance for Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Choir, Chamber Choir, and String Ensemble. (Disney, Classic Rock, Pop etc.)
  • Spring Concert: Performance for Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Choir, Chamber Choir, and String Ensemble. (Usually classical and "springy" music)
  • Watertown Idol: "American Idol" like event for students to compete in.

The WHS choral group has a good sound, with some that will go on and do amazing.

The WHS band is consisted of 2 bands, the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Both groups have a variety of instruments in them. Such as: Baritone saxophone, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet, clarinet, flute, trombone, baritone, tuba, trumpet, french horn, all percussion, sometimes a bass trombone, and an oboe. The two bands have been continuously winning golds for Fantastic Festivals.

The WHS strings group has violin, cello, viola, and bass.

Art Department

The schools art department offers many different programs including video production a ceramics. The school is filled with many talented artists who take advantage of the classes offered.

Classes

The students at Watertown follow the motto of DREAM that is reinforced every week during SSP. The goal of DREAM is to make the students strive to be the best they can be. In class the teachers try to input that as well, by making the students think critically and understand and like what they are learning, rather than teaching to the test.

  • Joe Cipriano, Class of 1972 - real name David Joseph Cipriano; television announcer; since 1988, the voice of Fox, CBS, NBC, Primetime Emmy Awards and Grammy Awards
