Walter Angelo Fox-Strangways, 8th Earl of Ilchester

Walter Angelo Fox-Strangways, 8th Earl of Ilchester GBE DL 24 September 1887 4 October 1970), was a British peer. He also held the subsidiary titles and styles of Baron of Woodford Strangways of Dorset and Baron of Redlynch of Dorset. Fox-Strangways inherited the earldom of Ilchester from Edward Henry Charles James Fox-Strangways, 7th Earl of Ilchester, his fifth cousin once removed, after the 7th Earl died without male issue.

Background and Education

Walter Angelo Fox-Strangways, 8th Earl of Ilchester was born on 24 September 1887. He was the son of Maurice Walter Fox-Strangways and Louisa Blanche Phillips. He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England, and graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

Consular & Military Service

Fox-Strangways was Levant with the Consular Service between 1910 and 1923. He was Vice-Consul at Mogador, Morocco. He fought in the First World War, with the Special Mediterranean Intelligence Bureau. In addition, Fox-Strangways fought in the Second World War, with the Queen's Royal Regiment.

Succession

He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Ilchester [G.B., 1756] on 21 August 1964. with the subsidiary titles of Baron of Woodford Strangways and Baron of Redlynch [G.B., 1747].

Marriage and Family

On 8 April 1916, Fox-Strangways married Laure Georgine Emilie Mazaraki, daughter of Evanghelos Georgios Mazaraki, an executive with the Suez Canal Company; the couple had the following children:

  • Group Capt. Maurice Vivian de Touffreville Fox-Strangways, b. 1 Apr 1920, d. 2 Jul 2006 (without issue)
  • Hon. Raymond George Fox-Strangways b. 11 Nov 1921, d. 27 Apr 2005 (has issue) [1]
  • Lady (Elizabeth) Doreen Jeanne Fox-Strangways b. 21 Jan 1931, d 18 September 2008. Married to Peter Skelton from 1953-1969, one daughter (Caroline b 1962); Married to John Livingstone from 1977 to 2008 (her death), no issue. [2]

The 8th Earl died on 4 October 1970 at age 83 and was succeed in the earldom by his older son, Maurice Fox-Strangways, 9th Earl of Ilchester.
