Wainscot society

In speculative fiction, a wainscot society is an entirely separate society that exists alongside the real one. If this society is deliberately kept secret from the outside world, the system of doing so is known as a masquerade. The trope was named by The Encyclopedia of Fantasy and refers to wainscots, or wall panels, as if the society was figuratively "behind the walls".[1]
