Volusia Saturnina

Volusia Saturnina also known from her funeral inscription as Volusia Latina Saturnina[1] was a Roman noble woman that lived in the Roman Empire in the second half of the 1st century BC and first half of the first century.

Family Background

Saturnina came from an ancient and distinguished Senatorial family, that never rose above the Praetorship[2] which was of eques status.[3]

She was the daughter of the prefect, Quintus Volusius from his wife Claudia. Her father served under Cicero in 51 BC to 50 BC in Cilicia[4] and was a pupil of his in oratory.[5] Claudia was a daughter of Pompey’s officer Drusus Claudius Nero and a sister of praetor, Tiberius Claudius Nero,[6] as Saturnina was a first cousin to Roman emperor Tiberius and his brother, the General Nero Claudius Drusus.[7] Her brother was the consul Lucius Volusius Saturninus.[8] She was born and raised in Rome.

Marriage & Issue

Saturnina married Marcus Lollius,[9] the son of the consul and military leader Marcus Lollius[10] and his wife Aurelia. Aurelia was a sister to the Roman Senator Marcus Aurelius Cotta Maximus Messalinus.[11]

Saturnina and Lollius had two daughters:[10]
