Vivekanand Sinha (Born 16 January 1972),[1] is the Inspector General of Police of the Bastar region in Chhatisgarh which is a maoist-conflict region in India.[2][3] [4][5] Sinha is an IPS officer and is a 1996 Batch IPS. He has also been in the Special Protection Group which looks after the security of Prime Minister of India.[6] During his tenure as IG in Bilaspur, Sinha walked on burning coal barefoot to convince the locals that there is no any magic in walking on coal. It's purely science so they shall not encourage superstitions and black magic. This was done to strengthen the human rights of women who were being harassed or boycotted after being labelled as a witch. [7]

In his tenure, two police stations in Bastar region which are severely affected by Left Wing Extremism have received ISO certificates.[8] Owing to the conflicts in the region, Sinha worked to change the perception of citizens towards the security forces in the area.He has also played a key role in giving a new outlook to Police department and changing the perception of people through different modes of community policing.[9]

Early Life

He was born in Bihar's Samastipur to Mr. J. P. Sinha and Mrs. Kamla Prasad. He completed his schooling from prestigious Sainik School, Purulia. He has a graduation degree from famous Ramjas College and an MPhil in history from University of Delhi. He joined the Indian Police Services in 1996.

Career

Mr. Sinha got Madhya Pradesh cadre and chose Chhattisgarh cadre in 2000 when the new state of Chhattisgarh was formed. He served as SP's of Dantewada, Rajnandgaon and Bilaspur districts. He also served as the DIG of the Special Protection Group ( SPG ) which looks after the security of Prime Minister of India. Mr. Sinha was appointed as the Inspector General of Police to Bastar in April 2017. He has done tremendous works in connecting the tribals with main stream society. He has done tremendous works to tribals through his community policing program. During his tenure, Bastar SP got the IACP award also known as Oscar for Community Policing.

Personal Life

He is married to Dr. Smita . She is a Chhattisgarh based doctor and medical practitioner. They have two sons namely Mayank and Priyank persuing their school education.
