Virginia Jane "Ginny" Hudson (born April 13, 1983) is an American flautist and teacher. She teaches in the Fort Smith area and serves instructor of flute on the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith faculty.[1] She's married to Justin Taylor.

Education

Hudson began her musical education at Dover High School in Dover, Arkansas. She continued her training at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas, in 2001. While at ATU, she studied flute with Karen Futterer. Hudson graduated magna cum laude in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in music with a minor in English. After graduating she spent an additional year at Arkansas Tech working on a graduate degree in English. In 2006 she accepted a scholarship from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she studied with world-renowned flautist and teacher Robert Willoughby.[2]

Teaching

During the summer of 2008, she accepted an appointment to the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith performance faculty.[3] Currently, her duties include teaching the flute studio, Music Appreciation, and Film Music Appreciation courses, as well as teaching for the UAFS Preparatory Academy of the Arts and maintaining a sizeable private flute studio. She also teaches at the UAFS summer band camp and orchestrates the yearly UAFS Flute Day[4], which is a favorite event amongst flute students of all skill levels.

Performing

Hudson plays flute and piccolo with the Fort Smith Symphony.[5][6] She can often be heard with the Garrison Wind Trio, the Fort Smith Chorale, and the University of Arkansas Woodwind Faculty Trio. She's also a founder and member of the Mockingbird Flute Quartet. She served as principal flautist for the Russellville Festival Chorale[7][8][9] for four years. While at the Longy School of Music, she performed with the Lowell House Opera Orchestra at Harvard University in a production of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. She later served as principal flautist of the River Valley Community Band for a number of years. Hudson plays on a Powell Custom Handmade flute with an Aurumite headjoint.

New music

Virginia is adamant about promoting new music for flute. She has commissioned and performed works by Boston based composer Brian John. In 2009, she was heard premièring the much anticipated Concerto for Flute and Wind Ensemble by Arkansas-based composer Joshua Reed.[10] She has worked extensively with Reed on numerous other works which were performed at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and at the University of Central Arkansas in 2008/2009.
