Ville Akseli Juurikkala (born 6 March 1980) is a Finnish photographer, music video director and film director, best known for his work with various rock and pop acts around the world, including Slash, Michael Monroe, Good Charlotte, Nightwish and HIM among others.

Early life

The son of film director Kaija Juurikkala and Matti Tukiainen, who worked for the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions, Juurikkala grew up in Lohja for a few years, before moving to Vantaa with his mother and brother, after his parents' divorce.[1] In his teenage years, Juurikkala played guitar in the band Evil Devil, and later took up photography at age sixteen.[1] He eventually applied to the Helsinki University of Art and Design, but was rejected.[1]

Career

Photography

After his rejection from Helsinki University, Juurikkala soon found work as photographer for City-magazine and eventually shifted to shooting advertisements, before being asked to do a photobook for the band The 69 Eyes, who were fans of his work.[1] Juurikkala soon became a prominent rock photographer in Finland, working with the likes of Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Hanoi Rocks and HIM.[1] In 2008, Juurikkala was introduced to the members of Good Charlotte, who asked him to join them on tour as their photographer.[1] Juurikkala accepted, and continued to work with the band extensively, ultimately relocating to Los Angeles.[1] During his time there, Juurikkala also worked with Kat Von D, Slash and Chester Bennington, among others.[1] Aside from musicians, Juurikkala has worked with other prominent figures, such as the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, as well as Finnish Formula One driver Mika Häkkinen. Over his career, Juurikkala has had several exhibitions of his work all over the world, including in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, as well as Finland.[2][3] In June 2017, Juurikkala held an exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum, titled HIM: Right Here in My Eyes, which consisted of previously unreleased photographs of the band HIM preparing for their farewell tour.[4][5] The exhibit was also held at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York in November 2017.[6]

Music videos

In 2012, Juurikkala was asked to direct a music video for Jesse Kaikuranta, the first runner-up of The Voice of Finland's first season, despite having directed only a few videos before.[1] Soon thereafter Juurikkala began working more prominently as a video director, working with various Finnish acts, such as Michael Monroe, Santa Cruz and Jonne Aaron, as well as international artists, like Bullet for My Valentine and Amaranthe.[1] Juurikkala has gone on to win various awards for his work in both photography and music videos, including City-magazine's "Best Rock Photographer" and the "People's Choice Award" for "Ballad of the Lower East Side" by Michael Monroe from the Oulu Music Video Festival.[2]

Personal life

Ville Juurikkala is married and has three children. From 2008 to 2011, he lived and worked in Los Angeles, but has since relocated back to Lohja, Finland, where his father also resides.[1]
