Vigen Sargsyan (Armenian:Վիգեն Սարգսյանը; born May 10, 1975) is an Armenian politician, and ex-Defence Minister of Armenia, serving from October 2016 until May 2018.[1][2][3] He is not related to either the former President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan or the former Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan. He left office at his own accord after the newly appointed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan promised to fire him.[4] Later Sargsyan said that he would continue to act as defence minister until a new minister is appointed.[5]
Biography
Early Life
Sargsyan was born on May 10, 1975 in Yerevan. From 1992-1999 he enrolled in Yerevan State University and studied at the department of International Relations and has a master's degree in the "History of Diplomacy and International Relations".[1] In 2000 he graduated from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University with a Master of Arts degree.
Political career
In 1995 The National Assembly appointed him as an adviser to the President. From 2000 to 2003, Sargsyan served in the Armenian Armed Forces and also as an adviser to the Minister of Defence. He was a lecturer from 2001 - 2011 at the American University of Armenia. On January 27, 2009, the then President Serzh Sargsyan appointed him the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration.[6] He held this post for over 2 years until he was dismissed in 2011.[7]
Minister of Defence
On October 3, 2016 by order of a presidential decree he was appointed Minister of Defence by President Serzh Sargsyan. He succeeded Seyran Ohanyan as Minister of Defence. He was reappointed as Defense Minister by President Armen Sarkissian in 2018.[8][9] Sargsyan resigned on May 8, 2018 following the election of Nikol Pashinyan as the Prime Minister of Armenia.[10][11] Sargayan served as acting defense minister until May 12th when David Tonoyan appointed to the position.[12][13]
Personal life
He is married and has three daughters.[1][6] Sargsyan was born into a family of medics.[6][14]He is fluent in Russian and English, apart from his native Armenian language.
