The Honourable Vesey Dawson, 2nd Earl of Dartrey (22 April 1842 – 14 June 1920), known as Viscount Cremorne from 1866 to 1897,[1] was an Irish Liberal politician.[2][3]
Family and early life
Dawson was the eldest child of Richard Dawson, 1st Earl of Dartrey and Augusta Stanley, daughter of Edward Stanley and Laid Mary Maitland. Educated at Eton College, he later became a Captain and then Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldstream Guards, retiring from the army in 1876.[3][4] In 1882, he married Julia Georgiana Sarah Wombwell, daughter of George Orby Wombwell and Lady Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers. Together, they had three children:[2][3]
- Lady Edith Anne Dawson (1883–1974)
- Lady Mara Augusta Dawson (1887–1961)
- Richard George Dawson (1890–1894)
Political career
He was elected MP for Monaghan in 1865 but stood down at the next election in 1868.[5][2]
Peerage
Dawson succeeded to Viscount Cremorne in 1866, when his father was made of Earl of Dartrey, and then succeeded to that title on his father's death in 1897. Upon his death in 1920, he was succeeded by his brother Anthony Lucius Dawson, 3rd Earl of Dartrey.[2][3][6]
Other activities
Dawson was High Sheriff of Monaghan in 1878.[2][3] He owned around 25,000 acres of land and was a member of the Travellers' Club on Kildare Street in Dublin.[4]
Death
Dawson died at his home, Dartrey Castle in County Monaghan, after a long illness in 1920.[6]
