Velvet Buzzsaw is an upcoming American horror thriller film written and directed by Dan Gilroy. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen. The film is anticipated to be released by Netflix in 2019.

Synopsis

In the contemporary art world of Los Angeles a personal assistant named Josephina suddenly becomes successful by coming upon the work of an unknown artist she found dead in her building. Having six-figures put to her name out of the blue while representing a deceased artist weighs heavy on her.

Life imitates art, art takes on a life of its own and big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.

Production

In June 2017, it was announced Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo had been cast in the then untitled film, with Dan Gilroy writing and directing the film, while Jennifer Fox will serve as a producer, Netflix will produce and distribute the film.[2][3] Speaking with Business Insider in November 2017, Gilroy teased the project saying:

"It's set in the world of contemporary art in Los Angeles, and its got a Robert Altman-like large ensemble cast. It's got a The Player vibe to it. There's a large cast and we're moving around from person to person as we move through this world. The story is being told through these different characters."[4]

In January 2018, it was announced the title was Velvet Buzzsaw.[5] In March 2018, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen joined the cast of the film.[6][7]

Filming

Principal photography began on March 5, 2018, in Los Angeles, California.[8]
