Vassilis Mazomenos (Greek: Βασίλης Μαζωμένος; born 1964, Athens) is a producer , screenwriter , director, member of both the European Film Academy [1] and the Greek Hellenic Film Academy [2] He is also a production designer [3] Producer of more than 30 short films and a poet[4] Mazomenos is one of the first Greek directors to exploit the potential of new technologies[5] in the difficult task of renewing the filmic language[6] Considered the most "special" than all Greek film makers of his generation, known for his visual and artistic experimentation and his influences from the early German expressionism.[7]

Life

Mazomenos studied political science at the University of Athens.[8] He is the son of the fighter of the National Resistance Mimis Mazomenos. His grandmother's first cousin was Alexandros Papanastasiou, the first president of the Greek Republic in 1924. His grandfather Vasilios, was an immigrant in the United States, where most of his relatives live.

Career

Mazomenos has worked as artistic director at the Kalamata Documentary International Film Festival and was also the vice-president of the Greek Film Centre. He has been a member of international juries in film festivals. From 2005 to 2011 he taught film at a well known Art College. Founder and director of Horme Pictures [9] where he is teaching film and producing shorts from 2012.[10] Mazomenos has worked as an author, writing for Film and Art in newspapers and art magazines. Also he has published in Gavriilides editions three collections of poems (2003, 2005, 2008).

Mazomenos' films have been accepted for International participation at the Montreal World Film Festival (2009 and 2012), the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (2009 and 2016), the International Film Festival of India (2009), the Fantasporto International Film Festival (1999, 2001, 2010, 2013, 2017), the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2017), the Cairo International Film Festival (2009), the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (2000), the Sitges Film Festival (1999), the FEST (Belgrade Film Festival) (1996, 1997, 2018), the Bengaluru International Film Festival in India (2017), the Ankara International Film Festival (2000, 2017), the Chicago International Arthouse FILM FEST (2015, 2017), the Maverick Movie Awards (2017), the Hellenic Film Academy Awards (2010, 2013), the Panorama of European Cinema (1998, 2002, 2004, 2009, 2012, 2017),[11] the London Greek Film Festival (2012, 2013, 2017), the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (2017), the Cyprus International Film Festival (2013) and at many others.

Awards and nominations

Mazomenos has been multi nominated for the Hellenic Film Academy Greek awards (2010, 2013, 2018). He was nominated for the European Fantasy Award in 1999 for his film Money, A Mythology of Darkness and won the same year the jury's special award in Fantasporto for the same film. He was three times awarded in Thessaloniki International Film Festival for his films The Triumph of Time (1996), Money, A Mythology of Darkness (1998) and Remembrance (2002). He has been also multi awarded in London Greek Film Festival (2012, 2013, 2017) for his films Guilt 10th day and Lines (film) . He won the Jury’s Special Award at the Panorama of European Cinema for his feature 10th day , won also the Special award in Cyprus International Film Festival (Cyprus) for the same film. For 10th day he was also nominee for the Best director (Tarkovsky Award) in the Blow-Up Chicago International Arthouse Film Fest.[12] For Lines (film) was nominee for best director (Tarkovsky Award) and best writing (Tonino Guerra Award)! in 2017 BLOW-UP · International Arthouse FILM FEST in Chicago , for the same film won award for best directing and was nominee also for best picture, best direction, best script in Maverick Movie Awards in 2017 and won in Accolade Global Film Competition Award in November 2017 the Award of Merit for Film Feature . In 2018 won the award of best director at See film festival Berlin and best feature at Helsinki in Scandinavian International Film Festival for Lines (film). Mazomenos also has been awarded for his work as a producer in short films.[13]
