Varagur

Varagur is a village in Thiruvaiyaru block, Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu state. Thiruvaiyaru is 18 kilometers and Thanjavur is 27 kilometers away from the village.

According to 2011 census the village has 719 households with the total population 2833, out of which 1402 are male 1431 are female.The total number of children in the age group of 0-6 was 303.[1]

Literacy rate of the village is 75%. Male literacy rate is 80% and female literacy rate is 70%. 2134 people out of 2833(the total population of Varagur) are literate.

Village with holy shrines

Varagur is situated on the banks of Kudamurutti River, a tributary of Kaveri river. Sri Venkatesa Perumal Kovil and Sri Maha Kailasanatha Kovil are famous and ancient temples constructed here. This is the village where the great saint Narayana Theertha swamigal who composed the famous songs Sri Krishna Leela Tharangini, attained deva mukti after he received the vishwaroopa dharshan of Lord Venkatesa Perumal.[2]

Ancient names of the village

Varagur was originally known as "Bhoopati Rajapuram". When great saint Narayana Theertha swamigal came here from Andhra Pradesh, it was a wild boar (called varaha in Sanskrit) that navigated him to this village. Hence the name Varahur, which changed to Varagur. The village was also called as Varahapuri, back then. Varagur is also known as "Bhooloka Vaikuntam" (heaven on earth) before 1000 years.[3]
