Valery Nikititch Rukhledev (born 18 January 1948) is a Russian sports activist. He is also a 6 time gold medalist in Wrestling at the Deaflympics from 1969-1977. He is also the current president of the Comite International des Sports des Sourds.[1][2]
Biography
Valery Rukhledev was born on the 18th of January,1948 in the region of Krasnoyorsk Krai, Russia. He studied at a Russian School for the Deaf in Novokuznetsk and in Odessa, Ukraine.
Sports career
Rukhledev is a 6-time champion in wrestling at the Deaflympics for men's category during the period from 1969 to 1977.[3] He represented Soviet Union at the Deaflympics in 1969, 1973 and in 1977. He was voted as one of the best deaf athletes across the world of the 20th century.
In addition to wrestling, he was specialized in other martial arts such as Judo and Sambo. Rukhledev was the national champion (Soviet Union) at the 1971 Sambo Championship.
Charges
In 1993, he founded the Sports Union for the Deaf in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and served as the first President of the Federation.
Currently, he is a member of the Council of Russian President, Vladimir Putin for people with disabilities (Russia Federation Presidential Counsel on the Persons with Disabilities).
In 2013, he was elected as the 9th President of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.[4][5] Previously, Rukhledev has also contested for the Presidential post in 2005 and 2009.[6]
