Víctor Alfonso Guzmán Guzmán (born February 3, 1995) is a Mexican footballer who plays as a midfielder for Pachuca.

Starting his youth career with Guadalajara, he would not make his senior debut until being loaned out to Pachuca in 2015. It was not until 2017 that Pachuca decided to purchase him.

Guzmán participated for Mexico in various youth levels, including the senior national team.

Club career

Pachuca

Guzmán joined Guadalajara's youth academy in 2012.[2][3] In June 2015, it was announced Guzmán was sent out on loan to Pachuca for one year.[4] He made his professional debut on 11 August 2015 against Monterrey.[5] He scored his first goal on 23 January 2016 in a 4–1 away win against Club America at the Estadio Azteca.[6] On 29 May 2016, after coming into the match as a 66th minute substitute, Guzmán scored the Clausura 2016 championship-clinching goal with a header against Monterrey at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer to draw the scores level at 1–1 in the second leg, giving Pachuca the 2–1 aggregate victory and their sixth Liga MX title.[7]

In December 2016, Pachuca permanently purchased him for the rest of the 2016–17 season from Guadalajara as a part of a trade-off with Rodolfo Pizarro heading over to Guadalajara.[8]

At the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup, in a quarter-final match against Wydad Casablanca, he would score Pachuca's only goal during a.e.t. in a 1–0 victory.[9]

On 18 August 2017, Guzmán would score his first goal and brace of the season against Morelia resulting in a 2–1 victory.[10] Four days later, he would score another brace and contribute one assist against Veracruz, winning 4–1.[11] He scored another brace the following month in a 4–0 win over Cruz Azul.[12] At the end of Apertura 2017, he would become the top Mexican-born goalscorer with 8 goals,[13] and be included in the Best XI of the Apertura 2017.[14] On the 4th matchday of Clausura 2018 against Tigres UANL, he would end up with a anterior cruciate ligament injury that would leave him out for 6 months, missing out on the rest of the tournament and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.[15][16]

Following his ACL injury, he would return to the fields on 22 July 2018 for the 2018–19 season as a starter in a 1–0 loss against Monterrey. On 18 August, he would come in as a substitute at half-time, contributing an assist and scoring; at the end Pachuca won the game 3–0.[17] On 21 August, he would score the tying goal in a 1–1 league match against Morelia.[18] On 29 September 2018, he would contribute all of the assists in Cruz Azul's 3–1 defeat against Pachuca, winning the Man of the Match honour.[19]

International career

Mexico U-20

Guzmán was called up to the Mexico U-20 team by Sergio Almaguer for the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Jamaica.[20] He played five matches and scored the third goal in a 3–0 victory group stage match against Honduras.[21] Mexico would go on winning the tournament.[22] Guzmán was then called up to participate in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup with Mexico in New Zealand, where he would appear in all three group stage matches but Mexico would finish last in the group.[23]

Mexico U-23

On 18 September 2015, Guzmán was selected by coach Raúl Gutierrez to play in the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship.[24] Going on to appear in all games, he scored the last goal of the final in a 2–0 victory over Honduras.[25] He would go on to be listed in the tournament's Best XI.[26]

Mexico national team

Guzmán made his debut with Mexico on 7 September 2018 in a friendly match against Uruguay in a 4–1 loss, coming in for Erick Gutiérrez at the 60th minute, managing to contribute an audacious overhead kick that hit off the bar.[27] On 11 October 2018, he would score his first national team goal in a friendly against Costa Rica, eventually winning 3–2.[28]

Style of play

Guzmán originally started off as a defensive midfielder but then-Pachuca manager, Diego Alonso, opted to turn him into a versatile player capable of playing anywhere on the midfield, including as a striker.[13][29]
