Unu (commonly: unu) is a German manufacturer of electric scooters based in Berlin. Since 2014, the company offers three engine sizes for their scooters. The vehicles are assembled in China and distributed in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands.
History
Company founder Pascal Blum used one of the electric scooters available during a stay in China in 2012, and came up with the idea of marketing such vehicles in Germany as well. Together with Elias Atahi, Blum founded the company in 2013 with the support of the Technical University of Munich. The company name refers to the term for "one" in the language Esperanto.[1]
Design
The electric drive motor is located in the rear wheel and can be configured with either 1kW, 2kW or 3kW engine.[2] For all three engines, the power is less than 4kW and the maximum speed 45 km/h, putting the scooter in the EC vehicle class L1e and making it approved as a moped. The vehicle can actively regenerate energy back into the battery by recuperation during braking.[3]

Market
The unu-scooter is custom made on-demand for each customer; it is then assembled in China to specification and delivered to the customer a few weeks later.[4] The scooters are sold on the Internet after customers have been able to arrange a viewing or test drive with a representative of the company. Only areas where partner workshops are located are able to order the scooter so that it is conveniently able to be serviced, while non-serviced areas are not yet supplied.[5]
After its introduction in Germany, the 2015 sales model was also extended to Austria, Switzerland, and in 2016 to the Netherlands[6], where the scooter is also offered in a throttled to 25 km/h version, which allows the Dutch driving without a helmet and on bike paths.[7]
