University of Economics in Bratislava (Slovak: Ekonomická univerzita v Bratislave) has a significant position in the system of higher education in Slovakia. It is historically the first institution of higher education in the field of economics in Slovakia.

As the only University in Slovakia it provides a comprehensive education of Economics and Management in all study programmes and at all three levels of study.

History

University of Economics in Bratislava began its history in October 1940, when the commercial and industrial Chambers of Bratislava, Banská Bystrica and Prešov set up a private College in Bratislava, which was granted the public right by the Government.

The name of the University changed several times during its history, from the College of business (Súkromná vysoká škola obchodná 1940-1945), through the Slovak College of Commerce (Slovenská vysoká škola obchodná 1945-1949), The College of Economic Sciences (Vysoká škola hospodárskych vied, 1949-1952) and The College of Economics (Vysoká škola ekonomická v Bratislave,1952-1992) to the University of Economics in Bratislava  (Ekonomická univerzita v Bratislave, 1992- up to the present).

The emergence of the University is linked with names of  prominent figures such as prof. PhDr. Jur Hronec, prof. Ing. Julius Pázman, prof. Ing. Vladimir Bunny, DrSc., prof. Ing. Ladislav Cicvárek and others. Just owing to these enthusiasts the year 1940 laid the foundations of economic education in Slovakia.

The College of Commerce started its activities without their own premises. The educational process was carried out in   premises rented  at various locations in Bratislava. With the help of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bratislava, in a fairly short period two buildings on Palisády were purchased for the College of Commerce.

A substantial improvement in locations occurred in 1960 when the College of Economics moved to a new building at the Comenius University in Bratislava, in Odbojárov street. Some departments, however, remained in the original college premises in Palisády and in Konventná street.

The issues with space for the college continued to be the number one problem that remained. Therefore, the school was forced to make several changes in dislocation of workplaces and to build new objects in the Odbojárov street.

This unsatisfactory situation was to be solved by the construction of a new campus, University of Economics in Bratislava – Petržalka in the Dolnozemská cesta, which was meant to meet all the requirements for teaching, research and development, accommodation and catering in one complex of premises. The construction of the campus began in 1983. The first object for teaching was Výučba 1, into which Faculty of National Economy and Faculty of Commerce moved in 1991, the second object Výučba 2, into which the Faculty of Economic Informatics, Faculty of Business Management and the other departments of the University moved in 1996.

By constructing the campus in Petržalka the University of Economics in Bratislava was given a decent stand as an important Slovak institution that really deserves it.

University of Economics in Bratislava, since its foundation, has brought up more than 100-thousand graduates for the needs of the development of economic science, economic practices and state administration. These graduates are active in all spheres of the national economy, at all levels of the economy management, many of them are representatives of our homeland at different positions abroad.

The most famous, or the most important graduate of UEBA is, for example, Michal KOVÁČ, the first President of the Slovak Republic in the years 1993-1998, the numerous vice prime-ministers of the Slovak Government, ministers of Finance, the governors of the National Bank of Slovakia since its foundation up to the present days, general directors of TOP companies on the Czech and European market.

Editions of the international scientific conference for doctoral candidates and young scientists organized by the UEBA in the context of its membership in the years 2015-2017 in the context of its membership in the EDAMBA network. In cooperation with several corporate partners in terms of their involvement in the sphere of social responsibility, the UEBA by launching its pilot Week of sustainability 2017, set up a space for the academic community to interact with broader and professional public.

The synergy of its post-doctoral graduates helped the UEBA to get stronger through the implementation of best practices, recommended by the European Association of universities (as in the case of IdeaPuzzle ® in relation to the philosophy of science), and the European Commission and the OECD (as for example in the form of HEI_Hack! in the sphere of innovation), along with the attention given to the issues of the sustainability potential to senior and junior mentoring.
