United Nurses Association (UNA), is a professional association of registered nurses in the state of Kerala in India. UNA acquired the trade union registration 08-06 of 2012 on 22/06/2012. United nurses association have no political stand. It was founded on November 2011[1][2][3] by a small group of nurses in Kerala with a professional registration.

A direct reason for the formation of this association is traced back to the death of Beena Baby, a Registered Nurse, who committed suicide due to staff bullying in private hospital and illegal management norms management.[4] The so-called "bond system" executed by the Mumbai based hospital was an indirect violation against Bonded Labor System (Abolition) Act, 1976. However, nursing regulator in India the Indian Nursing Council could not effectively intervene in matters relating to Nurses in the Service sector as they were not legally equipped by law to do so. Ms Baby's death triggered a public outcry resulting in a strike by 250 nurses.[5] This outrage led to formation of many nursing associations.[6]

Brief history of UNA updat from September 2018

Kerala nurses firstly joined together at thrissur district. And the first meeting was about the increased threat of sesizing up the assets of nursing students who have taken educational loans. Then, Beena Baby, a malayalee nurse committed suicide while working at a hospital in Mumbai due to bond issues with the management. That incident led to the creation of the organisation which discusses problems faced by nurses in their working environment. United Nurses Association was created by Jasminsha and 6 other working nurses of thrissur on 16 November 2011. UNA gained a massive replication among the nurses and the society through social media. The organisation was legally registered and named Kerala United Nurses Association - UNA under co-operation law and as a trade union.

As of now, United Nurses Association contains 5.5 lakh family members as working and retired nurses in kerala state only. We have another 3.5 lakh members from outside kerala and different parts of the world. And approximately another 9 lakh people are also part of the family because they are the families of the members of the organisation. UNA campaigns were never about the protection of nurses only, the organisation considered other staffs of the institution as our members too. And this makes our family bigger everyday. The organisation was just started 7 years ago but we have already achieved a massive increase of minimum salary from Rs.800/- to Rs.20000/- with a government declaration through our strong and constant strikes. UNA has committees in every district of Kerala and 457 hospital units are actively working under the 14 district committees.

The organisation has a strong basement in many states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Goa, Paschima Bengal, Bihar, Manipur and Rajasthan. 400 units are active in these states. In Delhi alone UNA has 12623 members, and 6000 permanent members among 137 units situated at Delhi NCR. In Maharashtra state committee UNA include 11020 family members and 48 very strong units in Mumbai and Pune. Karnataka state committee includes 7813 of UNA members.

The organisation have an active National Committee which includes every state representatives led by Jasminsha, President and Sudheep M.V, General Secretary.

United Nurses Association has coordination committees and affiliated associations at different countries like Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Newzealand, Libiya, Switzerland, Malaysia, Bahrain, America, Oman, Malta and South Africa. In which UNIQ (Qatar) and SINA (Saudi) got approval from Indiam Embassy.

United Nurses Association has earned the trust and support of Malyalee nurses and their families worldwide.

The organisation is actively participating on charity activities for people other than nursing community too.
