Unique molecular identifier

Unique molecular identifiers (UMIs) are short sequences or "barcodes" added to each read in some next generation sequencing protocols. They serve to reduce the quantitative bias introduced by cDNA amplification, which is necessary to get enough reads for detection.[1] UMIs are especially useful for single cell RNA-Seq.[2]
