UltraClash (1998)

UltraClash (1993) was the first UltraClash professional wrestling supercard event produced by Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW). The event took place at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 18, 1993. It was the first ECW event to be promoted by Paul Heyman. The event featured the debut of Ian Rotten, The Public Enemy and commentator Joey Styles.[2][1]

Event

Preliminary matches

In the opening match, Ian Rotten made his ECW debut by teaming with Jason Knight against the debuting tag team The Public Enemy (Johnny Grunge and Rocco Rock). Public Enemy hit a Drive-By to Rotten for the win and attacked Rotten after the match.

Next, Tony Stetson defended the Pennsylvania Heavyweight Championship against Tommy Cairo. Stetson attacked Cairo from behind until Cairo sent Stetson to the floor with a spinning heel kick. Hunter Q. Robbins III distracted the referee, allowing Stetson to hit Cairo with the title belt behind the referee's back and pin him to retain the title.

Next, Super Destroyer #1 competed against Super Destroyer #2 in a mask vs. mask match. Super Destroyer #1 hit a senton to Super Destroyer #2 for the win and then unmasked him after the match until The Dark Patriot attacked Super Destroyer #1 with a chair. Super Destroyer #2 teamed with Patriot to hit a spike piledriver to Super Destroyer #1 until J.T. Smith made the save, leading to a scaffold match between Smith and Patriot. Patriot threw powder in Smith's eyes and threw him from the scaffold onto the mat for the win. He continued to attack Smith after the match.

Next, Terry Funk and Stan Hansen took on Kevin Sullivan and Abdullah the Butcher in a Bunkhouse match. Butcher accidentally hit Sullivan as Funk moved out of his charge, allowing Funk to appliy a spinning toe hold on Sullivan until Eddie Gilbert attacked him to cause a disqualification. After the match, Dark Patriot came to the ring and fought Hansen as the two brawled to the backstage. Sullivan attacked Abdullah and a bunch of wrestlers came and tried to break the brawl. Hansen and Funk then came back and attacked Johnny Hotbody.

The following match was an intergender battle royal. Sensational Sherri and Angel showed a partnership by causing the eliminations of Jay Sulli, Don E. Allen and Hunter Q. Robbins III from the match while Tigra sat up on the turnbuckle. Sherri then fought Angel and ripped off her wig. Eddie Gilbert came to the ring and Sherri chased him out by jumping over the top rope, thus getting eliminated. Angel yelled at Gilbert and Tigra tossed her over the top rope from behind to win the match.

Next, Salvatore Bellomo competed against Sir Richard Michaels in a strap match. Bellomo called out Sensational Sherri to back him up as Michaels had Hunter Q. Robbins III in his corner. Robbins hit Bellomo with a cane but he fought back until Michaels hit him with the cane. Michaels missed a diving splash on Bellomo, who nailed a Pizza Splash for the win. After the match, Bellomo whipped Michaels with the strap until Rockin' Rebel returned to ECW from his suspension and hit Bellomo with a chair.

Shane Douglas defended the Heavyweight Championship against The Sandman in the penultimate match. The referee was knocked out by Douglas, allowing Paul E. Dangerously to attempt to hit Sandman with the cellular phone but Sandman grabbed Dangerously. Douglas got the phone and hit Sandman with it to gain a near-fall. Sandman hit a low blow and a diving crossbody to Douglas but Douglas reversed it and pinned Sandman to retain the title.

Main event match

The main event was a Baseball Bat match, in which The Headhunters (Headhunter A and Headhunter B) competed against Miguelito Perez and Crash the Terminator. After a back and forth action, a Headhunter hit a Moonsault on Crash for the win.

Reception

Wrestling Recaps staff gave mixed reviews on the event for being only an average event by writing "The scaffold match and main event are worth checking out but the rest is a pass. I’m in the middle on this one as it is an important show (see below) but really only had two matches worth seeing."[3]

The Wrestling Revolution staff wrote "Overall, a TERRIBLE show, made even worse by a terrible crowd. If it wasn’t a weapon-shot or in the scaffold, they booed and called it “boring.” The main event was the only thing on this show even close to being worth seeing. Most of this show was boring and repetitive. It felt like everything was “eight minute match, dirty/DQ finish, brawl afterwards.” I believe that the squash at the beginning and Douglas vs. Sandman were the only matches on this show that didn’t have brawls after them. Not a good start for the Paul Heyman Era in ECW. Thankfully, it eventually got a lot better."[4]

Mike Campbell of 411Mania gave a score of 5, stating "It's fun at times, especially the two tag matches, but this is not a good show in the least."[5]
