Ukhta State Technical University (USTU) is the largest university in the Komi Republic of Russia. According to the Federal Education Agency of Russian Federation, Ukhta State Technical University officially gained its status not in 1967 but in 1958. Since as early as April 5, 1958, the USSR Ministry of Higher Education issued an order to establish a corresponding faculty branch of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas as a learning and professional training center in Ukhta.[2] On 5 April 2013, USTU celebrated its 55th anniversary.

Academic year

The academic year is divided into two semesters. The first semester usually runs from September to December, the second from February to June, with breaks in early January for Christmas holidays and a summer holiday running throughout July and August.

Research projects

There are developing 12 research schools, design and projects in USTU. One of USTU research schools - on heavy (high viscosity) oil production technologies based on steam heating of prof. Ruzin. Since 2009, there are started innovational project of heavy oil on special area of LUKOIL company Yarega oil mines. There are only 2 such places in the world - village Yarega and Canada, Calgary.

USTU organizes international and industrial conferences and technology seminars:

  • Gas industry conference named after G.V. Rassokhin (February);
  • International scientific youth conference "Severgeoecotekh" (March);
  • Professional conference for academic and research stuff (April);
  • Humanitarian conference "Communications. Society. Spirituality." (April);
  • Conference of heavy (high viscosity) oil (November);
  • Konvent - the forum which supports talented youth (April);
  • Innovatika - the forum which gather together over 180 people for dialogues without ties (May).[4]

Sport

There are developing over 44 unique types of sports including football, basketball, judo, skiing, running, volleyball, mini-football, boxing, swimming, chess and many others. Alexander Sukhorukov won a silver medal in Olympic Games in Beijing (2008).[6] A sport complex was commissioned by the rector of the university on the 26th of September 2017, the sport complex has a fully equipped gym, sauna , massage section and a swimming pool.

International relations

The university has a number of relationships with schools all over the world. It has set up several projects in cooperation with schools abroad such as University of Nordland, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, University of Tromsø, Riga Technical University, Univerzitet u Novom Sadu, Duquesne University, Technical University of Ostrava and other. It is a member of the University of the Arctic network.

Afro Dance Ukhta "students of USTU"

There's an "AFRO DANCE STUDIO" Afro-dance is the mix of African dance fundamentals such us Afro-house, Kuduro, Azonto etc. with different dance genres such as hip hop, house, and jazz. This fun energetic dance moves with Afro beats and Afro house music. All these different genres are typically inspired by local tribal forms of dances that morphed into the creation of homemade party moves. Edmund Osei-Bonsu, a student at Ukhta State Technical University, is currently the teacher of this dance genre at the Afro-dance studio in Ukhta.https://en.ugtu.net/afro-dance-studio

Female hockey club "Arctic University"

Women's hockey team "ARCTIC UNIVERSITY" is the school's ice hockey team and is one of the best teams in Northern Russia, they tour Russia and Europe. It includes hockey players from Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Podolsk, Pervouralsk, Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Odintsovo, and Volga.

Planeta University

Men's basket ball team "Planet University" is also amongst the best is Russia a whole, they compete on all levels of basketball, the teams attracts players from all over the world.In May 2012, Basketball Team "Planet University" became the winner of the championship of Russia among men's teams of Major League. Big names like "James Ellisor" and "David Lobo" once represented the university.
