Trident University International (Trident) is a private online for-profit university in California. It offers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs as well as certificates[1] in business, health sciences, education, and information systems. Formerly a branch of Touro College and University System, Trident was purchased by Summit Partners in 2007 and is now a standalone institution.

Trident offers 5 doctoral degrees,[2] 8 master's degrees, 8 bachelor’s degrees, 1 associate degree, and 6 professional certificate and diplomas programs. During[3] the FY 2015 report year, the university reported a six-year graduation rate of 26% for first-time students and 61% for all undergraduate students within eight years.

Enrollment as of 2014 was about 75% military.[4]

History

Founded in 1998, it has its headquarters in Cypress, California. Currently the university has more than 30,000 alumni.[5]

Originally called Touro University International, the University was a former branch campus of Touro College and University System, New York. In October 2007, Trident became a stand-alone institution when it was purchased by Summit Partners, a private-equity firm in Palo Alto, California, and Boston, Massachusetts. After purchasing the university, Summit Partners reorganized TUI and changed the name to TUI University, in January 2011.[6]

In June 2015, Travis Allen was named President and CEO. He has previously held senior management roles at Argosy University, University of Phoenix, and Endeavour Learning Group based in Melbourne, Australia.

As of September 2015, Trident has 6,197 students many of whom are either military veterans or active duty service members. The University had more than 28,000 alumni,[7] including more than 22,000[8] alumni who are active duty military, spouses, dependents, National Guard, or veterans.[9]

In May 2016, Dr. Mickey Shachar was named Dean of its College of Health and Human Services.[10] In June 2016, Dr. Heidi Linn (Gilligan) Smith was named Dean of its College of Education.[11] In May 2017, Dr. Debra Louis was named Dean of its Glenn R. Jones College of Business.[12] As of August 14, 2017, Dr. Lisa Mohanty was named Dean of its University College[13]

Academics

TUI is a research-based institution and is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC Senior College and University Commission).[14] Trident University offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level degrees in a 100% online environment in the following colleges:

Students

The student body of Trident is made up of a large number of veterans and active service members. In 2014, 2,202 students were receiving benefits from the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and 7,233 students were using the DoD Tuition Assistance Program.[15]

Faculty

In total, Trident has 394 faculty members. Most are part-time (353) with 41 working at Trident in a full-time capacity. The student to teacher ratio is 17:1. More than 80% of faculty have a doctoral degree or the highest available degree in their field.
