Tragic Prelude is a mural painted by John Steuart Curry.

Description

The mural was commissioned in 1937, and done in egg tempera and oil paint. It is 350 centimeters (136 in) tall and 940 centimeters (372 in) long.[1] The Kansas state legislature objected to the mural, and the artist left it unsigned.[2]

Analysis

The mural depicts John Brown in the prelude to the Civil War, during the bleeding Kansas unrest. A study for the mural is in the Spencer Museum.[3]
