The Top Gun film series consists of two action-drama films based on characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr. involving the US military Naval aviation. Writers of the first movie were inspired by an article titled "Top Guns" published in California magazine three years prior to the production on the project. Tom Cruise stars in the films as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The series co-star Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Miles Teller.
