Tom Moyane

Tom Moyane is a South African development economist and suspended commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Moyane was appointed chief tax collector in September 2014.[1] He had previous served as national commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services and chief executive of the Government Printing Works,[2] and had been an advisor to the State Information Technology Agency.[3] While in exile from South Africa during Apartheid he had worked for government departments in Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau.[4][5]

Moyane has been heavily criticised for his financial management of SARS[6] and his treatment of a controversial investigation that saw the departure of 55 senior staff and managers from the organisation.[7]

2017 book The President's Keepers claimed that Moyane's predecessor had begged South African President Jacob Zuma to submit tax returns before Zuma appointed Moyane, and described Moyane as a crony of Zuma.[8] SARS rejected allegations in the book and threatened to sue its author[9] and lay criminal charges on the disclosure of confidential taxpayer information.[10]
