Tom Devine

Professor Sir Thomas Martin Devine OBE is a Scottish historian and academic.

Early life

Devine was born in Motherwell, Scotland.[1] His father was a schoolteacher.[2] He graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 1968.[3]

Academic career

He was appointed professor of Scottish History at the University of Strathclyde in 1988. He later became dean of the faculty of arts and social sciences, then deputy principal.[4]

In 2005 he was appointed to the Sir William Fraser Chair of Scottish History at the University of Edinburgh.[5] He remained in this chair until 2011 and was director of the Scottish Centre for Diaspora studies until the summer of 2014.[4]

Awards and honours

Devine was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1992[6] and the British Academy in 1994.[7] He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society[8]

He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2005 New Year Honours.[9]

He was knighted in the 2014 Birthday Honours.[10]
