Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth is a book exploring previously unpublished images of artwork, illustrations, maps, letters and manuscripts of professor J. R. R. Tolkien,[1] curated by the Bodleian Library and written by Catherine Mcilwaine,[1] Tolkien archivist at the Bodleian.[1] The book largely documents professor Tolkien's creative processes behind works like The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.[1] Not only does the book draw on the collection at the Bodleian Library but also collections at Marquette University, as well as private collections.[1][2]

The book coincides with an exhibition of the same name at the Bodleian Library which runs from 1 June 2018 (publication date of the book) to 28 October 2018.[3]

On 22 March 2018, the Bodleian Library released a trailer for the book and exhibition via the official YouTube channel.[4]
