To Kill a Clown is a 1972 American drama film directed by George Bloomfield, written by George Bloomfield and I. C. Rapoport, and starring Alan Alda, Blythe Danner, Heath Lamberts and Eric Clavering. It was released on August 23, 1972, by 20th Century Fox.[1][2]
Plot
A hippy couple trying to reconnect and save their marriage rent a secluded beach cabin from the sociopathic, conservative, veteran Mr. Ritchie (Alan Alda). Trouble arises when relations are strained and Ritchie's two aggressive Doberman dogs get a taste for hippies. Mr. Ritchie’s nasty character soon shows through. Mr. Ritchie even walks in on the wife in her pyjamas in bed, and watches her, amused, getting dressed. One night Mr. Ritchie sets off fire works outside the home, as the dobermans find their way into the couple's house. After stabbing one of the vicious dogs, the couple engages in a physical fight with Mr. Ritchie who is headed towards the couple's house. Fireworks continue as the husband fights with Mr. Ritchie and attempts to throw a stone on him. The scene ends with Mr. Ritchie catching his breath, while the wife cries over her husband all in the dark. Whether or not Timothy has actually died remains up to interpretation, no scene follows to suggest Major Ritchie was brought to justice for his horrific actions, nor for the couple to be brought to justice for stabbing and killing Ritchie’s dog.
