Plot
In the Oaxacan sierra, a humble and brave Native hunter named Tizoc plans on marrying a fellow Native girl named Machinza. Nevertheless, he is at war with her family, as he hunts more animals without the need for firearms. Meanwhile, a Caucasian woman named Maria arrives in town with her father. After a hunting expedition goes wrong and Tizoc rescues her father, Maria begins to become enticed by his demeanor and approach. She chats with Tizoc and eventually falls in love with him. She starts to consider her fiancee, a Spanish officer named Arturo, a bit too pampered and foolish.
When Tizoc admits to no longer love Machinza, she goes towards her brother Nicuil. He kills her and decides to go after Tizoc, who kills him. Maria feels she has no choice but to go with Tizoc, whom she truly loves.
Unfortunately, as they near the cave that can be their hideout, Cosijope, Machinza's father shoots an arrow, killing Maria. Heartbroken, Tizoc grabs the arrow which he uses to kill himself also.
The film ends with Tizoc's voice repeating that the souls of lovers become nightingales after death.
