Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute

Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute (‘Chen Institute’) is a non-profit institute founded in 2016, by husband and wife Tianqiao Chen and Chrissy Luo with the aim of deepening understanding of the human brain. The Institute supports fundamental research to expand the boundaries of neuroscience, fostering cross-border interdisciplinary research to uncover the working mechanisms of the brain, understanding how the brain perceives the world, and how perception impacts behavior and well-being.

The Institute focuses brain research on three core areas – brain discovery, brain treatment and brain development.

Husband and wife Chen and Luo are pioneers of the online game and digital publishing industries, as leaders of the Shanda Group.

Areas of focus

The institute aims to support brain research with a focus on understanding the sensation-perception mechanisms and related systems of memory, attention, learning and expectations. The Institute is interested in three core areas: brain discovery, brain treatment, and brain development.

Programs and funding

The Institute will partner and work with universities and institutions around the world by providing support in the form of endowed institutes, professorships, or topic-specific programs for early career scientists and researchers. In December 2016, the Institute announced a US$115 million donation to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech),[1] establishing a new institute and provide continuous funds for neuroscience research.
